Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Journal for the Study of Biblical Literature (JSBL) aims to contribute high quality research to the academic world. To achieve this goal, it is important that journal editors, peer reviewers and authors agree upon and abide by standards of ethical behaviour. This statement is based on COPE guidelines (http://www.publicationethics.org/), adjusted for JSBL needs and circumstances.

  • ◎ All editorial staff and their responsibilities are listed in both print and online editions of the journal to ensure the transparency of the journal's editing process.
  • ◎ Editors in editorial committee make fair publication decisions based on the reports of peer reviewers, the quality of the submission, and the scope and rationale of the Journal, without regard to other factors.
  • ◎ The editor shall select suitable reviewers in the relevant fields and strive to ensure the fairness of the review, the compliance of the peer review process and the smooth progress of the review.
  • ◎ Editors should work with reviewers to check submissions and prevent research misconduct.
  • ◎ All editors and editorial staff must protect the confidentiality of the manuscript and the data of author and reviewers. They also shall not use unpublished materials in manuscripts in their own research.
  • ◎ If any academic misconduct is confirmed, the editor shall cooperate with the publisher, issue a statement and clarify, correct, apologize, or withdraw the manuscript.
  • ◎ Once a peer reviewer has confirmed his/her suitability, he/she should conduct an objective and fair, professional review; assist the editor in making editorial decisions; and offer advice to help the author to revise and improve the paper.
  • ◎ The reviewer shall alert the editor if any potential academic misconduct is found in the submitted manuscript. Reviewers should also point out relevant published work not cited.
  • ◎ A reviewer should proactively withdraw if s/he happens to discover the author’s identity, or if any conflict of interest is present.
  • ◎ Reviewers shall not share or discuss the manuscript without the editor's consent, and shall not use unpublished materials in the manuscript in their own research.
  • ◎ Authors shall ensure the originality of the paper and the authenticity and accuracy of quotations. Authors shall not plagiarize others’ work, forge or partially forge cited materials.
  • ◎ Authors shall not submit the same paper to more than one journal concurrently, or publish the same paper repeatedly in different journals.
  • ◎ The named author should be the person who has made the most significant contribution to the paper.
  • ◎ Authors should clearly state any financial support received.
  • ◎ After a paper is published, an author is obliged to cooperate with the editor to correct or retract the paper if significant error is discovered.
